Nyíregyháza, town
in northeastern Hungary, seat of
Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County. It is a popular
tourist and health resort and the economic and
transportation center for a prosperous agricultural
region. The Jósa András Museum, containing
a collection of archaeological and ethnological items, is
here. Rebuilt on the ruins of an older settlement
destroyed during the Ottoman occupation of Hungary, the
community developed in the 18th century as the center for
the reclaimed Nyírség swamp region.
Manufacturing industries were built up after World War II
(1939-1945). Population (1999 estimate)
