Denise Elizabeth Crant: New York, New York

DeniseAlthough she was born in Fort Myers, Fla., and lived in Hackensack, N.J., Denise Elizabeth Crant was a New Yorker at heart.

"I used to give her heck about not being a real New Yorker," said her brother John, of Manhattan.

But even a teasing younger brother could see that her job in the facilities department of Marsh U.S.A., on the 93rd floor of the north tower of the World Trade Center, had changed her demeanor. "It was like having her old self back," Mr. Crant said. "She had the glow back."

Ms. Crant, 46, returned in September 2000, after taking a five-year break from the city. She first moved to New York in 1987 to get married. She left the city when the marriage broke up. "Until she left, she didn't realize how much she truly loved it," Mr. Crant said. "Every time I ever spoke with her it was all about moving back to New York."

When she returned, she and her brother, an executive recruiter, spoke daily. Most mornings she would take the bus into the city, often arriving by 6:30 a.m. Then she would leave a voice-mail message for her brother, teasing him about his "banker's hours."

"So I would call her pretty much every morning when I got in," Mr. Crant said. "I really miss those calls."
